Back To School Plan

August 11, 2012  3 Comments

Below are 3 posts for teachers in the Northern Hemisphere that are getting ready to go back to school

As teachers start to think about going back to school, it is important that they have a plan that will enable them to start the year off right.

There are two areas that I always recommend that teachers consider as they begin to think about going back to school.

1.  Getting to know your students quickly

I am not talking about just getting to know their names.  The faster you can discover your student’s prior knowledge of the subject, what motivates and discourages them, the faster you can connect with them.

There are two tools I recommend to facilitate this:

2.  Have a clear plan of what you expect from your students.

Focus is a powerful tool.  When you are consistent in your expectations, you are able to build your class culture quickly.

The definition of culture is “That’s just we do around here”

When it comes to setting your culture there are three areas you should consider:

  • Your classroom management strategy
  • Your student engagement and motivation strategy
  • Your approach to using technology with your students.

The above three areas form the basis of your class or schools culture.  If you get these areas right, the rest of your back to school worries will pretty much take care of themselves.

Do you have a back to school ritual that you like to follow?  What do you always do as the first activity to welcome your students back to school?

Over the last few days we have been looking at ways schools waste money and what we can do about it.  These observations are based on my time spent in hundreds of schools all around Australia.

We have looked at the following four areas schools waste money.

1.  The principal is not aware of their leadership role.

2.  Hire the wrong type of person to oversee the technology in your school.

3.  Spending money on licences for software and becoming too reliant on hardware such as servers.

4.  Thinking programs not steps

Here is the last way I see schools are wasting money and what they can do about it

In the first and second post of this series we have looked at the following three ways schools waste money and what we can do about it:

1.  The principal is not aware of their leadership role.

2.  Hire the wrong type of person to oversee the technology in your school.

3.  Spending money on licences for software and becoming too reliant on hardware such as servers.

In this post we will look at an area that flies under the radar of schools.  In fact I am yet to find a school that is consciously aware of this money trap!

busy teacher 300x199 How Busy Are You?

How busy are you?

It’s been a while since I’ve updated the blog.  I have been a little busy creating my online training platform where schools can save loads of money on casual relief and teachers can learn how to better motivate, manage & engage their students from the comfort of their own house.

We kicked off the first session of training on Wednesday night, and I was wrapped with the response and feedback.  If you would like more details you can go to www.studentmotivationseminar.com.

At the end of last week I decided that I needed to go back to a couple of articles I had written for an educational magazine and practice what I preach.  Here are the articles I wrote on work / life balance.  I also went back to using some of the ‘Get it done’ principles I wrote about in this post.

As of today, I’m making a commitment to regularly share ideas and resources that will help make the busy lives of teachers more manageable and enjoyable.

Hope you have a GREAT and BALANCED week next week!
